Last week, a reader asked:

I’m someone who prefers stability and routine, but I’m starting to worry it might be holding me back. How can I tell if I’m too deep in my comfort zone, and what’s a manageable first step to start challenging myself without feeling overwhelmed?

This is a great question that many struggle with from time to time.

Being in a comfort zone is like staying wrapped in a cozy blanket. It’s safe, predictable, and anxiety-free. But it can also keep you stuck.

Studies show that a little discomfort fuels growth and performance. Our bodies and minds thrive in a "Goldilocks" zone where we're challenged enough to spark growth without tipping into overwhelm.

If you’re too comfortable, you risk plateauing, but too much anxiety can hold you back. Finding the balance is key.

Try this reflective exercise to gauge where you stand.

Reflect on your comfort level at work.

  • When was the last time you tried something new?
  • Are you learning and developing new skills?
  • Does work feel repetitive?
  • When did you last take a risk? What was it?
  • Do you feel it’s time for a change? What would you change?
  • What’s one thing you’re avoiding due to discomfort?

Take action.

List three actions you’ll take to step outside your comfort zone this week.

Being comfortable is easy. Growth requires stepping into the unknown. It’s where we make leaps in our careers, develop new skills, and achieve our goals.

Challenge yourself this week.

Embrace a bit of discomfort, and watch how it pushes you toward new heights. Growth starts when you break routine.
